Agnes Of God - Readers Theater at the Oak Tree Main Stage

  • The Lavra Arroyo Grande, CA U.S.A. (map)

For the first time, our farm/gathering center known as the Lavra is hosting live theater on the main tree stage amphitheater. Our good friend and local acting legend Tom Ammon has selected a play, Agnes of God, and is directing a talented ensemble of three actors who collectively have performed in more than 100 local plays. The performance will be a readers' theater rather than a full production, so the actors will have scripts and staging will be minimal but this play is driven by the intense dialogue so we can promise it will be memorable. We are offering it for free to guets, though donations are encouraged to offset the performance costs, especially to the holder of the rights to this play.

For those who haven't seen Agnes of God, the play centers on a court-assigned psychiatrist who must assess the sanity of a novice nun, Agnes, who has been accused of murdering a baby. The Mother Superior determinedly keeps young Agnes from the doctor, further arousing suspicions. Who is the father of the infant and who is responsible for its demise? What is nature of faith, forgiveness, and ultimately love when tragic situations envelop us? With a powerful climax, this play will draw you in, make you think, and lead to meaningful conversations for all who attend.

Agnes of God was performed nearly 600 times on Broadway, was turned into an Oscar-nominated movie by Norman Jewison, and represents some of the most compelling play writing by John Pielmeier in the last half-century.
